In 2015, the village of Mlima Shabaha was experiencing hardship with water and food insecurity, and asked for help with a school lunch program and building a water pipe for the school. At that time, the school had no running water and students had to carry water jugs filled at home each morning to school. Therefore, a pipe was needed to bring running water to the school. For this project, pipe parts were purchased and community members dug the trench for the pipe with shovels.

In addition, students spent their day without food, subsisting all day on a breakfast of tea at home. It was suggested it would be beneficial to buy corn, beans, oil, sugar, and salt in order to cook lunch for 150 Mlima Shabaha students. The simple act of providing lunch has had a transformative effect, increasing school attendance as well as student performance. Since then, school breakfast and lunch programs have become a top priority for the organization and have been implemented at every school Amka Sasa supports. Currently, Amka Sasa’s program feeds almost 400 students at Mlima Shabaha School.
